Rudolf Koch Quote with Zapf's Optima
Rudolf Koch's moving statement of the book artist's 'creed' is set in Goudy's Deepdene Italic, with a setting of the 'Roman' alphabet in Hermann Zapf's timeless Optima, visually spaced with caps and lower-case alternating in color.
These cards are printed on Crane's Lettra 300gsm in three colors. The stock was dampened before printing to soften the fibers, and allow for the most perfect, crisp impression possible.
The design was done by Peter Fraterdeus in the late 1980s, and hand-set in foundry (hard metal) type for the first limited edition at that time. Recently we found the original type still standing in an old galley (having been carted hundreds of miles and moved three or four times in the interim), and decided to run a new edition. The metal type was proofed on matte coated proofing paper on the Vandercook Universal I. The proof was scanned at 2400 dpi, and cleaned up to remove artifacts prior to making film and photopolymer plates.
This new edition of 300 pieces was printed on the 10x15 Heidelberg Windmill in three colors, two custom mixed plus black.
